Open Question: Is my son just showing early signs of puberty, or is it maybe something else (erections, blushing)?

Not exactly what I mean, but fairly close. My son is 14. I’ve had him for a full year and I adopted him last october without a partner and on my own.

Just as an example:. Last saturday later in the evening after I took my shower and put on my bath robe, I went into the living room where he was watching some talk show on tv and sat beside him on the couch. We were about to get ready to watch a movie and turn off the lights, I started putting some cream on my legs and feet while still sitting with him. Immediately his face turned bright red, but he didn’t act any different and we continued chatting. I’m pretty sure he’s oblivious his face turns red like that. When the talk show was finished I went to turn off the big lights and he went to grab the big blanket, we snuggled up and started the movie. He loves when I run my fingertips through his hair or scratch his back while we cuddle, and being the naturally affectionate person I am I enjoy giving that to him, and I know he needs it. Movie was done at about 2am so we went to bed, and on weekends I am O.K with sleeping in my bed with me, I don’t see any harm in it at all and he’s asleep within seconds. Note that we do this all the time on weekends and stay up late, so this is not a change for either of us. For the past Month now, on weekends like these I’ve noticed and felt the “hard” spot down there for him, but I have never said ANYTHING about it or mentioned it, he’s never said anything either. Like the last saturday I noticed it right away, but its seems like he doesn’t even know I notice it.

I was the first person in his life to introduce cuddling and affection to him, and showing him what love is. He came from a not-so-nice family and had a nasty childhood (abusive), and he hates thinking about any of it. The first month he was withdrawn from me, but I kept being persistent and at the same time gave him his space, but after the first month he came around and started becoming affectionate.

Would it be a good idea to address these things with him and maybe talk to him about it? The way his face turns bright red and the hard spot he’s been getting, or should I ignore it? I know puberty is often an awkward time for a teen, so I just am looking into his best interests.
